The 56k(kilobit) modem also known as the dial up modem, connects your computer to a standard phone line. These modems can be used for "dialing" into the internet, sending faxes, transferring files, or even recieving/making phone calls from your computer. These modems are usually in the PCI or ISA slot of a computer and usually have 2 phone jacks, one from the main phone line to the comouter, the other from the computer to a standard telephone you can use when not using modem.
Dial-up modems are generally limited to a speed of 56KB/s (or 56 kilobits/second)or less, which when compared to a Network Interface Card (NIC)(at up to 1000MB/S or 1000000KB/s)is extremely slow. Dial-up modems are becoming a less popular way of connecting into the internet, and data transferr, NICs are becoming more popular for a couple main reasons, they have a much faster connection, and do not tie up your phone line when in use.
