The chipsets are located on the motherboard and are the very most important part of a motherboard. Almost every bit of data that goes through the computer passes through the chipset. The speed of a motherboards chipset generally dictates the speed of the motherboard itself. There are usually two chipsets on a computer, The Northbridge, which helps control data to and from the CPU and RAM as well as other parts of the computer, and the Southbridge, Which usually controls the expansion slots and on newer systems, have a keyboard controller on them.

There is also another chip, which although it is not really part of the chipset I include it anyway, this chip, on newer systems is called the Super I/O chip, the function of this chip is to provide support for older devices that are not plug and play devices, and other devices, generally called legacy devices.
