The sound card does pretty much what it says, it controls the sound on your computer. Most computers have 3 different sound ports on the sound card, a line in (input sound), a line out (output sound to your speakers), and a microphone jack. Some sound cards have more jacks for surround sound speaker systems and special mixing and editing hardware, which also comes at a price.

Sound cards are often built onto the motherboard, but sometimes, especially on older computers, they are an expansion slot.Sound cards are not as demanding on your computer as video cards, so the are usually placed in a PCI expansion slot, ISA in older systems. Many older sound cards come with a connection for a joystick or a game controller, however this is becoming less popular because most computers are coming out with faster, easier connections like USB ports.
